Project Assignment #2

Due: Thursday November 7 in class. (Worth 10% of project grade.)

In this assignment, you will write a proposal for your term project. The proposal should be an outline of what you intend to do for the project and it should include (at least) the following points.

  1. The objective of your project.
  2. A definition of problem/issues you will study.
  3. A summary of the tasks you intend to do.
For example, in an experimental study, this might include the algorithm(s) you intend to implement, the computing platforms, the types of experiments you plan to run, how you plan to test or analyze the results of the experiments and what you hope to learn from them, etc.
For a survey paper, this should include a clear definition of the topic (make sure it is not too broad) and references to some of the papers with which you intend to start. Remember, for survey papers I would also like you to define the areas/problems in the field which require further research.
  4. A status report on what you have done so far.

The proposal does not have to be very long, but it should be sufficiently detailed so that I get a good idea of what you plan to do (so I can give you feedback). I imagine that you should be able to do this in 2-3 pages. I anticipate that this proposal will be incorporated into your final report for the project. In particular, the first two points listed above may remain very much the same, and you will replace the third and fourth points by a description of what you have done and any conclusions you have formed.

Your write-up should be produced on a computer using some text processor, and you should check it for spelling and English. A portion of your grade, for this and future project assignments, will be on presentation.
