MPI on BlueGene/L

Silvius Rus - Research

The Implementation of the Message Passing Interface on the BlueGene/L Architecture

Summer 2002, Internship
at the Thomas J. Watson IBM Research Center, within the BlueGene software team led by Jose Moreira. My mentor was Gheorghe Almasi. I worked there on the design and implementation of the MPI (Message Passing Interface) for BlueGene/L, in collaboration with the MPICH 2.0 team at Argonne National Laboratory.

My part in the project consisted in designing and implementing basic MPI functionality by adapting an existent MPICH 2.0 TCP-based implementation to the performant but complex interprocessor communication network of the BlueGene/L parallel architecture.

I implemented the specifications of the MPICH generic basic send/receive interface using native BlueGene/L communication primitives. This resulted in functional MPI point-to-point communication capabilities, which in turn led to functional collective communication. I also ported a basic version of the MPD job startup mechanism.

By the end of my internship term we had achieved a functional MPI implementation for BlueGene/L.
