The purpose of the course is
to expose you to a broad range of current research topics in your field
to provide you with support to get the most out of first hand
participation in a research project as an undergraduate.
Class Meeting Schedule:
While this course has a scheduled weekly meeting time, we will only meet on an
as needed basis. Instead, students in the course will complete several assignments
that are designed to assist the students in achieving the course goals.

To receive credit for this course you must satisfy all of the following

Research Participation Report.
Satisfactorily complete at least 2
Research Seminar Reports.
Satisfactorily complete at least 1
Research Seminar Paper Report.
Career Planning Assignment:assignment (html) Due: October 17, 2016
In this assignment, students will write two essays.
The first will be a 2-3 page essay describing their personal career goals.
The second will be a 1.5-2.5 page essay describing a particular technical project that they
wish to pursue after their undergraduate studies.
Research Participation Report:assignment (html) Due: Report due by December 7, 2016 (last day of classes)
For this assignment, students will participate in research and will report on it.
Students who are not currently involved in research will meet with faculty, identify
a research advisor, and prepare a preliminary research proposal.
Students who are already involved in research will work towards a public presentation
and/or peer-reviewed publication of their research.
Research Seminar Reports (2 total):assignment (html)
Due: At least 1 must be submitted by October 5, 2016 and both must be submitted by December 7, 2016 (last day of classes).
For this assignment, students attend and report on research seminars that are offered in the college of engineering.
Research Seminar Paper Report (1 total):assignment (html)
Due: Must be submitted by December 7, 2016 (last day of classes).
For this assignment, students read a technical paper authored by the speaker for
one of the research seminars for which they will prepare a research seminar
report (described above), and write a brief report on that paper and submit it
prior to the seminar. The goal is for them to learn about the topic in advance
of the seminar so that you will be better prepared and able to get the most out of the seminar.
